The
Aussie Gateways Project
Background Information
The
Aussie Gateways Project aims to disperse visitors throughout
the Northern Rivers Tropical NSW region, thus giving all tourism
industry operators an opportunity to gain a reasonable share
of visitor yield.
The
project also aims to educate visitors about the many and varied
attractions of the region by using a mix of cooperative media
marketing including television, radio, print media and the
internet.
In
May 2001, the Federal Dept. of Industry, Tourism & Resources,
Canberra, recognised the merits of the Aussie Gateways Project,
in particular its potential to enhance all facets of the tourism
industry in the Northern Rivers Tropical NSW region. As such
a federal government grant from this department, was released
to stage the Aussie Gateways Project.
The
official launch and information night held at the Ocean Shores
Country Club in July 2001, was the first session of the Aussie
Gateways Project. Its aim was to inform tourism industry operators
about the project and encourage them to attend workshops that
were held later in the year at Tweed Heads, Ballina, Lismore,
Yamba, Casino and Hastings Point. At these workshops valuable
information about tourism establishments, tours and attractions
was gathered. This information was used to build tour packages
for the Northern Rivers region. Some of these have been listed
on the Aussie Gateways web portal and others will be showcased
in print media.
Another
important aspect of the Aussie Gateways Workshops was the
gathering of information from tourism industry operators about
their preferences for media advertising of the region.

Current Information
The Aussie Gateways Project has now progressed to the stage
where all workshops have been completed, valuable input has
been received from industry operators and many have become
financial members of the Aussie Gateways network. This has
allowed for a considerable amount of regional advertising
to take place in areas such as Tamworth, Toowoomba, the Southern
Gold Coast and Newcastle.
Using
input from tourism industry personnel, the project managers
Mark & Lisa Russell have produced television commercials
that showcase the beauty of the Northern Rivers region and
entice visitors to experience accommodation centres, tours
and attractions operated by members of the Aussie Gateways
network. Using cooperative campaign strategies, membership
funds are used to produce media advertising, (including television,
radio and print media) that directs potential visitors to
the Aussie Gateways web portal. From this internet site they
then access the web sites of Aussie Gateways members and make
bookings for accommodation and tours etc.
