Waterfall
Way Towns Nambucca
Heads
(
pop 6000) fabulous beaches only a few minutes off the Pacific
Highway. Nambucca Heads is well worth a detour - in fact,
it has become even more popular since the highway bypassed
the main street! An important coastal port with ship building
and timber mills as the main industries in the 1800's and
early 1900's, this is now a major tourist destination for
discerning visitors.
Things to See & Do
Beaches - clean, uncrowded and inviting, the surf and river
beaches are popular all year round. Main Beach is patrolled
throughout the summer school holidays and at weekends between
October and Easter. Shelly Beach in particular is very scenic.
Ocean Lookouts - many lookouts offering spectacular views
are dotted along the headlands - views to South West Rocks
in the south; almost to Coffs Harbour in the north and west
along the river to the mountains.
Foreshores Boardwalks - from the RSL Club car park a series
of boardwalks wind a path along and over the water to the
river entrance. Story boards highlight historical sites.
Gordon Park Rainforest and Nature Walks - a unique network
of trails in the midst of commercial and residential development.
Headland Historical Museum, Main Beach Headland. A
wealth of historical treasures in a scenic ocean setting.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club, Stuart Island - possibly
the only golf club in the world totally surrounded by water!
This challenging 18 hole golf course is set on an island in
the Nambucca River and is popular even with non golfers. Views
to the ocean, abundant birdlife.
Mosaic Sculpture, Bowra Street. Dolphins, Fish and an Octopus
emerge from concrete waves in what may be Australia's longest
sculpture -"The River" - from where it meets the
sea, through towns and farm land to the mountains of the Great
Dividing Range.
Nambucca Valley Model Railway, Pelican Cres. Scale
working models of NSW trains wind their way through city and
countryside. Ph 6568 7395
Painted Poles, power poles in Bowra St have been painted by
local artists using the theme - Where the River Meets the
Sea.
Pennywood Cottage, Bowra Street. Home of Australia's Biggest
Bear. Collectables, gifts and furniture made to order.
Stringer Gallery, Entertainment Centre, Ridge Street. Quality
local works of art.
The Swiss Toymaker, Pacific Highway 5km north of town. Handmade,
traditional wooden toys made and decorated.
Ph 6569 5190.
The V Wall, Wellington Drive. An outdoor gallery at the
river entrance where visitors are encouraged to leave a postcard
message on the enormous rock boulders. The less artistic will
enjoy viewing messages from all over the world.
Fishing - your choice from off-shore, beach or estuary. The
breakwall at the river entrance is probably the most popular
spot or hop into a boat for a day on the river - Warrell Creek
can be quite fruitful.
