Way Towns Sawtell
Sawtell
is a picturesque beach village 10km south of Coffs Harbour.
It is far enough away to enjoy its own identity and at the
same time benefit from South Coff's university, airport, new
hospital and international stadium facilities
An established tourist drive (tourist drive 18) leaves the
Pacific Highway at Park Beach and takes one south past the
jetty foreshores along the link road through Sawtell and then
back on to the Pacific Highway at Lyons Road, in the vicinity
of the Butterfly Farm.
A local tribe of Aborigines, the Kumbaingeri, gave Sawtell
the name of Bongil Bongil which has since been given to the
newly allocated national park of wetlands which buffer Sawtell's
southern perimeter. These wetlands feed Pine Creek and Boambee
Creek, which are two very important fish breeding areas.
Sawtell's northern perimeter is defined by the Boambee Creek
and scenic headland lookout which boasts perfect whale watching
in winter. The Boambee Creek Reserve below is a great spot
for a family picnic offering a kiosk, swings, toilets, and
shelters with gas barbeques. It's a great place for the kids
to swim, canoe of fish.
Beautiful tree - lined streets contribute to the town's "beach
village" atmosphere. There are individual shops, cafes,
restaurants and drinking holes, with people utilising the
takeaway hamburger, pizza or fish & chip shops and sitting
under the shady fig trees in the median strip to relax.
The local cinema takes you back in time because it has been
lovingly restored to it's former glory and heritage. It shows
current movies, old favourites and the travelling film festival
which creates a lot of interest.
Sawtell is a popular tourist destination, not only because
of the temperate climate and holiday facilities but also because
accommodation is available at various grades and prices, all
within walking distance to the village centre, beaches and
creeks.
You will find numerous sporting facilities including golfing,
bowling, boating, croquet, tennis, swimming, BMX and fishing.
Sawtell also boasts famous surfing spots like Trapdors, Murrays,
the track and Southies for the keen board riders, depending
